Our Board and CEO

The RMAC Board has is made up of six Directors who are skilled in all aspects of
agribusiness, governance and regulatory affairs and led by an Independent Chair.

Don Mackay

Don Mackay joined the Board of RMAC in October 2016, bringing with him over 40 years’ experience in major corporate agriculture in Australia. This includes Managing Director of Rangers Valley Pty Ltd, Managing Director of Agricultural Co Ltd (AAco) and General Manager of Elders. Don has extensive experience in raising funds in capital markets in Australia, Britain, North America and Asia; and investment management.

Currently, Don has a number of other non-executive roles including Chairman of B&W Rural Pty Ltd, Director and Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee for Seymour Whyte Ltd (an ASX listed Civil Construction company), Director Rob Carr Pty Ltd, Director of the Queensland Investment Corporation Agribusiness Industry Advisory Board and non-executive Director of Thames Pastoral Co Pty Ltd.

Don has been actively involved in industry not-for-profit associations in key leadership roles of the immediate past president of the Australian Lot Feeders Association and past president of the Australian Council of Livestock Agents (ACLA). He is also the immediate past Chair of the Meat & Livestock Australia Board Selection Committee.

Holding management qualifications from the University of NSW and the Australian Graduate School of Management, a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors; Don was also awarded the “Centenary Medal” by the Prime Minister for “Distinguished Service to Primary Industry”. Don is currently on the RMAC Finance, Audit & Risk Committee.

Board of Directors

James Campbell

In August 2015, James was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Sanger, a Senior Executive role within the Bindaree Beef Group. This followed a 15-year professional career spanning Chartered Accounting at KPMG and Institutional Banking at ANZ with a consistent specialist focus on agricultural business.

Most recently, James led ANZ Institutional Agribusiness in China from 2011 – 2015 where he also served as a Director of the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai for 2 terms. In previous banking roles, James managed Institutional Banking portfolios in Victoria, Queensland, Northern Territory, and New South Wales.

James was elected to the Australian Meat Processor Council (AMPC) Board as a Processor Director in November 2015. In July 2016 he was elected Chairman of the Australian Processor Corporation (APC) within the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC), and Director of the Red Meat Advisory Council (RMAC).

James is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia & New Zealand  and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He holds a double degree in Commerce (Accounting) and Business Administration from the University of Canberra. James is on the RMAC Finance, Audit & Risk Committee.

Simon Crean

Simon joined the Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council as Chair in 2014.

Simon is actively engaged in range of other non-executive positions including Deputy Chair of the European Australian Business Council, Monash University Councilor and Director of Linfox International Group, Luna Park Melbourne and LiveCorp. He is Chair of Carbon Nexus and a Board Member of the Museum of Australian Democracy; and previously held Directorships with Qantas and  the Australian Industry Development Corporation.

Simon served as the Member for Hotham in the Australian Parliament from 1990 to 2013.  During this time, Simon was leader of the Australian Labor Party and Federal Leader of the Opposition and held various Cabinet positions as Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, Minister for Trade, Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, Minister for Employment, Education and Training, Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts.

Prior to joining politics, Simon worked in a number of trade unions including as General Secretary – Federated Storemen and Packers Union and was President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions  from 1985 to 1990. He has served on a range of national and international Boards and Advisory bodies.

Simon holds a Bachelor of Laws/ Bachelor of Economics from Monash University and has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Deakin University.

Lachie Hart

Lachie Hart is Managing Director of Stockyard Beef which is an integrated lot-feeding and marketing operation located in South-East Queensland.

The family-owned business was established in 1958 and has gained the reputation of being one of Australia’s leading high quality grain-fed beef brands and exports its beef products throughout the world. In 2016, Stockyard Beef won the prestigious Premier of Queensland’s Export Award for Agribusiness.

Lachie is currently Chair of the Australian Meat Industry Council and brings in excess of 30 years’ experience in all facets of the beef supply chain from breeding and backgrounding; lot feeding; processing and international marketing.

He has played a key part in diversifying trade and market access for the Australian beef industry through key roles such as Chair of Industry’s Market Access Advisory Committee, Chair of the National Export Beef Council, Committee Member of Australian Meat Industry’s Language and Standards Committee and Chair of the crucial Australia/Japan Free Trade Agreement Taskforce.

Lachie is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors; and seeks to achieve a vibrant Australian red meat industry where all sectors of the supply chain are working together to produce the best quality products for the most discerning global consumers.

Tess Herbert

Tess was elected as President of the Australian Lot Feeders’ Association in September 2015, bringing with her a lifetime experience in high end feedlot business management.

Tess is an owner and Director of Gundamain and Ladysmith Feedlots, an Australian leading lot feeding business winning the 2015 Feedlot of the Year award in the 3000 to 10,000-head category and recognized as a “Top 25” Australian feedlot operation.

Tess had a previous career in education and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University, a Graduate Diploma of Education from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Letters from the University of New England. She is also a Graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Tess has been actively involved with the Australian Lot Feeders’ Association as Councilor since 2009.

Jeff Murray

Jeff is the President of the Sheepmeat Council of Australia and an Owner/Partner of Hillside Farms in Western Australia.  Jeff runs his family farming enterprise with a focus on high quality production of prime lambs and cereal crops in the 14 inch winter rainfall zone of south Western Australia.

He brings a wealth of industry experience as Vice President of Sheepmeat Council of Australia and Chair of the Western Australian Farmers Livestock Committee. He has  also held a range of advisory roles in relation to live export, market access, marketing, NLIS and R&D.

He is the Chair of the RMAC Finance, Audit & Risk Committee and Chair of the RMAC Selection Committee.

Howard Smith

Howard is the current President of the Cattle Council of Australia (CCA) and brings over 30 years’ experience in beef production and marketing in a family business.

He is an owner and partner SA&B Smith & Sons Land & Cattle Co which runs up to 7000 head of breeding and fattening beef cattle for premium grass fed brands, feedlots and live export as well as 7000 acres of grain throughout Central Queensland.

Howard was previously President of advocacy group AgForce Cattle, has been actively involved with Cattle Council as Councilor since 2006 and is a Member of the Meat & Livestock Australia Board Selection Committee.

Howard spearheaded the development and commercialisation of the Pasturefed Cattle Assurance System, a boutique customer assurance program for grass fed beef.

Chief Executive Officer

Anna Campbell

Anna joined RMAC as Chief Executive Officer in 2016. Anna has a range of expertise in public policy, international marketing and not-for-profit management with a specific focus on the Australian red meat and livestock industry.

Prior to commencing at RMAC, Anna worked as Senior Policy Director for AgForce Queensland, a leading member based agribusiness advocacy group. At AgForce she managed the beef policy portfolio and worked on a range of successful reforms focused on profitability for Queensland beef producers.

Her passion for the Australian red meat and livestock sector comes from a childhood spent in Blackall, Central Western Queensland.
